Sarkozy calls for revamp of capitalism

President Sarkozy of France is NO left winger, so I found it amusing that he calls for a change to how capitalism operates and more importantly talks about the POSITIVE role government has in the economy. Milton Friedman must be rolling around in his grave at this thought! The issue certainly outlines the subject tension we face between classical and modern day liberalism when it comes to the economy. I know what you're thinking, this questioning of economic policy could can profound effects but I wouldn't worry about it right now, after all, which politician there would want to threaten their yearly trip to the Swiss Aplines . . . the rest of us can be happy with our cake. Read about it here.

BTW - I found a link to the Gender gap on here that had interesting stats for those who care to view them.

  1. The sense I am getting is that the government wants more control over the economy, and for good reason too. There definatly needs to be some reforms for banks. I'm just not sure weather the government should be "restore[ing]" morals. Ignoring the vauge definition of what constitutes as moral, the last thing we need is the government trying to force their beliefs upon we, the people. Morals and ethics should be left up to the individual, not the government. Sooner or later, some politicians will start to use the current economic situation; and the fear associated with it; to limit freedom in trade.

  2. By the looks of it, this looks like Sarkozy trying to weasel his way into another term in the French parliament. I googled 'French presidential election' and came to two conclusions.

-The last time this guy got elected was in 2007
-He was elected with approximately 31% of voter support (meaning, he barely made it because the closest guy was 25% - this is all assuming my facts are correct and I'm nigh-certain they are).

This leads me to believe that he's trying to gain voter sympathy for a possible upcoming election (Once again, I'm not very familiar with the French system of election or how long a term is for a president, but 4 years is generally how long it is for any elected into high office). If it's taken him this long to attempt to make any sort of solution, he deserves to be removed from parliament. Not to mention he's a right-winger elected into a European country (read: not a very likely scenario these days).

I don't even know this guy and I already don't like him.

Who knows, maybe I'm out to lunch?

  3. I support the Obama plan to make banks smaller. After a certain point in a businesses,(banks for example) it isn't about helping people. The question isn't, how can we de a better job at helping? It now because, How much money can make from this? And who will it go to? I think the government needs to interfere in order to bring this economy on its two feet again. Just how much is the question. Individualism and Interventionism should still be acknowledged. It is a matter of finding a nuetral ground between them. The government needs to realize that they can control individualism. But a certain degree of intervention from the governement would be good, to even things out.

  7. Who ever it is that is commenting on this blog by attacking me realize that this is an optional activity that is not forced on students. As my opening statements suggests, I'm very fortunate to have students who will go beyond the call of regular class instruction to seek out more information, progressive or otherwise to enrich their education. If you want to debate, let's debate, if you want to educate then do so. Otherwise, most who enter the blog are 18 and over making them adults, and thus having the capacity to make up their own minds. By the way, I value as my students know in class an array of opinion as that is the only way we progress as a society.
