Sarkozy calls for revamp of capitalism

President Sarkozy of France is NO left winger, so I found it amusing that he calls for a change to how capitalism operates and more importantly talks about the POSITIVE role government has in the economy. Milton Friedman must be rolling around in his grave at this thought! The issue certainly outlines the subject tension we face between classical and modern day liberalism when it comes to the economy. I know what you're thinking, this questioning of economic policy could can profound effects but I wouldn't worry about it right now, after all, which politician there would want to threaten their yearly trip to the Swiss Aplines . . . the rest of us can be happy with our cake. Read about it here.

BTW - I found a link to the Gender gap on here that had interesting stats for those who care to view them.

Ahhh...the protests restore my faith

The anti prorogation rallies across Canada has me pumped. It is easy to believe that people don't care about political issues but evidence as witnessed (short video in this article) across this great land shows people do care....your thoughts on this?

Haiti...dark past, dark present and what of the future...

I'm not a particular fan of CNN but this journalist is one of the few I think comes with as balanced perspective as possible. Fareed Zakaria shares a history lesson on Haiti here.  Haiti was in certainly in trouble before the earth quake and this article found here will outline this. Finally, in a short video, Naomi Klein speaks to how the disaster can be used to advanced US capitalist ambitions (video on shock doctrine found on one of my older posts). Let us hope for the sake of the Haitian people the world focus and aid leads to a brighter future and not the continued shroud of darkness as it is encountering now.
ADDED: Another clip, added Feb.1 can be found here on the need of guns for aid? The costs of the soldiers and weapons that have landed well you take a look. Another clip that discusses Haiti's financial picture and what can be done...6 minutes but well worth it.

Corporate control by court order !!!!

This is incredible. I've always believed that court systems represented us regular folk. Further, that they were the last refuge for justice for all. Now I see they are just pandering to corporate interests. But then again, John Jay one of the drafters of the American constitution did say it best, " the people that own America, should run America". Compare his words to Jefferson's at the bottom of this short article. If you want more on what this decision means, take a look at the video on court ruling on Michael Moore's web page here. I found a satirical look at the implication of the court order here...lol

You must see this <2min twist on terrorism. Would you agree with Mr Olbermann on this one? Watch his wit in motion here.

You gotta love Rick Mercer

He's not only funny with his political satire but he makes a point. Check this out. If you haven't seen the Rick Mercer report, here's a link to some video...pretty good stuff I believe.

Good article re: terror threat

I enjoyed the sesame street scene on fear of dark lol but of course the article that follows is important as we come nearer to finishing our course.  Is terrorism working to keep the population of countries worldwide docile? Are we so afraid to act for the common good because of the state of fear we are kept in? This fear takes all sorts of forms from the debt bogey man to terrorist insurgents ready to blow up grandma! My personal worry: are we becoming so paranoid that any act out of the ordinary will be seen as dissident behavior thus subject to some form of 'policing'?  Your thoughts on this????
