Guns....how should liberalism respond to them?

Newtown's Sandy Hook's saw the shooting of a bunch of school aged children in Dec of 2012. What was done about it? Do people feel better and/or safer for their children's safety for how it was dealt with? What does this suggest about guns and the price people pay for the freedom to own them?
